WHAT DO LAW STUDENTS NEED IN LEARNING ENGLISH? INSIGHT FROM STUDENTS AND ALUMNI

Abstract


In nowadays Era, it is undeniable that English become one of the primary qualifications in workplace. In order to compete, the graduate is required to master English language aside from mastering his own field. Responding to this issue, English educational practitioners are responsible to design the align learning objective as aim establishing qualified higher education graduate. Conducting need analysis is one of the methods that can be completed as an effort of educational practitioners to meet the students’ needs. This research purposes to slight on investigating: the most difficult skills to be perceived by law students, the basic skills and materials considered fundamental to be taught in learning process. Descriptive quantitative was applied to gather the data. Seventy-four of second semester students and alumni majoring law at private university in East Java were randomly chosen to fill out the questionnaire guideline distributed though Google form. The data collected were analyzed its percentage by using Microsoft Excel. The findings of the first research question revealed that writing was the most difficult skills to be perceived by the students majoring law. Moreover, the finding of the second research question claimed that speaking was assumed as the most necessary skills to be taught. Furthermore, formal and informal English language were expected to be involved in English learning materials.
